Henry: 06 Months

Dear Henry,

Six months?  SIX MONTHS??  How is this even possible?  At some point you've gone from being a lump of a newborn to an increasingly independent little boy.  It seems like these days you're learning something new every day- whether it's a new sound (squealing!), a new skill (sitting up!), or observing what's around you (the cat!), you're growing up before our eyes.  One day you were super wobbly when we tried to sit you up, the next day you're sitting up and playing with toys.  You've also started to really be into your toys and you love to play.  The funniest thing this month?  You've learned we have a cat.  Yes, we've always had him (and he doesn't seem to like you, sorry...) but you just discovered this furball running around avoiding you.  And you are OBSESSED with him.  Anytime he's around we can't get you to look anywhere else, and you just grin at him.  When you're on our lap and he's behind us laying on the top of the couch, you're constantly reaching out trying to touch him.  LUCKILY he's a very good cat and lets you grab at him for a few seconds before getting up and running away.  I have a feeling your relationship with him is going to be an interesting one.

You're also sleeping through the night now, which we very much appreciate.  You go to sleep around 9:00 after a walk and a bath, wake up around 11 for your last bottle and then you sleep until I have to wake you up by 7:00 to leave for daycare.  We're still waiting for those first teeth to pop through- you've been showing signs of teething for months now, but still we wait.  I can't tell you how often people say to us "What a happy baby!".  And you are.  You're constantly smiling and giggling and very rarely cranky (except maybe at daycare I hear...).  And of course we have strangers stopping us to tell us how handsome you are.  You are absolutely the very best part of our lives and we are thankful everyday that you made your way into our lives.

Dear Henry,

You are at such a fun age.  Your dad and I are constantly talking about how fun, how happy, and of course, how handsome you are.  But seriously, this is such a great age.  You're still immobile for the most part, but you're definitely wanting to sit up.  You're constantly "talking" to us and you've learned to fake cough to get attention.  Don't worry buddy, we're already paying attention!  You know the best part of this past month?   Y O U   L A U G H E D ! ! !   It was the most amazing sound.  I cannot wait until you are doing it constantly.  Seeing your face light up and that giggle come from the bottom of your belly, it was incredible.  In other news, you're still not a great sleeper.  I'm convinced it's just because there is so much to explore around you.  From the beginning people have always remarked about how alert you are.  And it's true.  It's like you're absorbing as much into a day as you possibly can.  Including your Dad and I.  The way you watch us (especially him) with such intensity is amazing.

At night we're still swaddling you to get you to sleep longer.  But if we don't, the positions that we find you in are so hysterical.  It's like you're stretching out as far as your little limbs will possibly go.  We were on a roll for awhile where you were sleeping through the night.  But then you got sick and we've only had a few nights of it since then.  But we're getting there.

Another thing?  People are amazed at what a good baby you are.  You'll let anyone hold you.  You'll just be content no matter where you are and you don't make a peep.  Case in point?  For the 4th of July holiday, we had a few people who were shocked when you started to whine because you were hungry because they hadn't heard you make a noise in over a day!  So as long as you're fed and not tired, you're in the best of moods and we feel incredibly fortunate that we have such a happy baby. You pass out smiles to everyone who glances your way (and what a smile it is!) and you definitely have that same charm that your Dad has.  I cannot wait to see what you're like as you get older.

Dear Henry,

I cannot wrap my mind around the fact that you're four months old!  It feels like you've been in our lives forever and at the same time it feels like you were just born.  You have been sick most of this last month because of daycare and we feel badly about it daily but I have to say, you're taking it all like a CHAMP.  Even when we can tell you feel miserable (through your coughing and sniffles), you're still giving us big grins and giggling.  You are THISCLOSE to giving us a full out laugh.  In fact just last night we thought it was the night.  So we're hoping within the next week we'll get to hear that sweet sound.  You're also now able to roll over from your tummy to your back even though you don't appreciate having to do it.  Tummy time is still not your favorite but you're doing SO WELL at it!  Your head and neck is so strong and I'm constantly impressed with you.  We take you to the doctor tomorrow for your 4 month checkup and we're hoping you've gained a little bit of weight and height.  But if not, you'll just be my little peanut, and I'm okay with that. You are such a pleasant, happy baby and we are constantly thankful for that.  We take nightly family walks around the neighborhood and you're always totally on board with it- sometimes just looking around, sometimes falling asleep, but never making a peep.  You're always smiling, and as long as we're within sight, you will spend hours just laying there looking at us.  You and I get to spend every Friday together since I don't work and I have to tell you, I look forward to that day every single week.  There's nowhere I'd rather be than hanging out with you and Dad.

Dear Henry,

Oh buddy, this month was so much better than last month.  You have begun smiling and giggling (still waiting for that first belly laugh!) and you're always so happy.  We also battled your first cold.  In the process of your first cold, your Dad and I realized that we have that parent's intuition because we just knew you were "off".  You weren't our normal happy baby.  Luckily it only lasted a few days and you were back to knocking our socks off with that smile.  This month too you got to spend a full week with Daddy, a full week with Grams Joy, and a full week with Grammie Lynne.  Talk about spoiled!!  Starting next week we have to take you to daycare and to say that I am devastated by that is a total understatement.  I know that you're going to have a great time there, but I wish I could just stay home and snuggle you all day long.

Every single night your Dad and I put you near us and just play with you and you coo and smile and giggle and it is truly the best time of my life.  You have Dad's crooked smile and I couldn't love it any more.  We've been trying to figure out who you look most like (we know you have Dad's smile and my eyes), but really, you just look like our sweet little Henry.

We've finally got you moved out of the bassinet and into the crib- but we're still waiting for the time that you sleep through the night.  Hopefully this will be the month!  But you're so much easier these days that even when we get up with you at night to feed you, you fall right back to sleep- and let me tell you, your Dad and I REALLY appreciate that.  You crack us up with your independence.  At night now when we're eating we can sit you in the recliner by yourself and you'll just sit there and watch TV- perfectly peaceful.  And that is also when you seem to smile the most.  I wish I could freeze this time because it feels perfect.  But I'm also just dying to see what your personality will be like in the coming years- and to watch you play with Dad and grow up to be a gentleman.

Henry: 02 Months

  Dear Henry,

It's been a rough month, buddy.  It seems as if you're going through your "fussy" stage, not to mention we found out you had reflux so you've been in a bit of pain while we got your medicine working.  You fight sleep as often as possible during the day- maybe so you can stay awake and see this new world around you?  You also took your first long trips (to Toledo) and slept in the car the whole way (your Dad and I thank you for that!).  We've moved you to sleeping in your own room, though you still don't like your crib and you've also begun sleeping for long stretches late at night so even though it hasn't been all night yet, I'm very thankful that you're letting me sleep a bit longer these days- I think we both needed it.  But you've also begun smiling constantly and we think you're thisclose to laughing- a sound that we cannot wait to hear!  You started eating cereal a couple times a day and your face leads us to think that you're still not sure what to think about it. You're still a little man, but at least you're finally starting to outgrow your newborn clothes and fit into 0-3 month and size 1 diapers.  So though it's been a rough month for us all, we still stare at you for long periods of time thinking about how lucky we are to have you.  Hopefully these next few weeks will start to pick up and be a bit easier on us all.  We're doing our best to make you happy and to show you how happy you make us.  We love you more than you'll ever know.

Henry: 01 Month

Dear Henry,

You've been in our life for a month now.  Where has that time gone already?  You are so, so loved and every day we can't believe that you're really ours.  We stare at your little face, mesmerized by the faces you make, curious as to what the world looks like to you, and thinking about how lucky we are that you joined our family.  You've had visitors come to see you every single weekend since you were born and everyone is just as smitten with you as we are.  You're such a good baby.  You sleep well, you eat well, and you are pretty much always in a good mood.  Every once in awhile we have a few hours of rough times, but one look at your face and your Dad and I immediately forget the frustration.  We still can't quite figure out who you look like the most, but we're thinking you have my eyes and mouth and Dad's nose and ears.  You're still so tiny that even newborn clothing is often too big for you- but regardless, you look SO damn cute in everything we put you in.  You have a closet full of clothes that we can't wait for you to wear and are definitely going to be one styling little man.  At your one month appointment, you were 8 pounds, 12 ounces (you've grown so much!) and 20 1/4 inches!  I love that I get to spend every day with you, and as soon as Dad comes home at night, he immediately takes you from me so he can get in his own snuggle time.

Your "monkey face" cracks us up • You purse your lips when I come at you to kiss you, clearly you know that I'm not going to stop kissing you ... ever • You open your mouth nice and wide any time we come close to your mouth • You are nice and calm with your washcloth while in the bathtub • You're an excellent snuggler and love to be near us • You have the softest skin and the brightest eyes • When you wake up and stretch, it always cracks us up • You often stick your arm up in a fist while you're sleeping • When we have you on our chest, you keep your head lifted up so that you can look at our faces • You've held your bottle more than once while we feed you - baby genius?
