If You Want to Be, Then Be
I recently had a talk with a good friend about life. She's going through personal changes and I encouraged her to use the time to think about what she wants for once. To really get deep into her soul and think about how she wants her life to turn out. I asked her what her dream job is and she listed a children's author, owner of a coffee shop, and comedic actress. I told her that 2 of those 3 things seem like they're actually things that could very easily happen (the actress thing may be a little more difficult to pull off) and that she just needed to put those goals in her mind and find the path that takes her to them.
I've had very different ideas of what I've wanted to be for a long time. But for as long as I can remember I've loved to write. I originally went to college to be a journalism major until I realized that journalism isn't exactly what I wanted. It took me a long time and some closed doors to figure out how to be a writer in the way I wanted to- and that's when I began my blog three years ago. I can come to this space and write what I want, when and how I want and put it out there for others to see. And if others enjoy it, great! If not, I'm still writing and doing what I love. Through blogging I've also been able to write for newspapers and magazines and various websites. I also really wanted to do something that challenged me, that let me use my writing skills and creative design side. I have that in my full-time job now when I'm creating proposals and designing graphics.
I've always loved the quote "If You Want to Be, Then Be" because it's how I've always lived my life. I wholeheartedly go after the things that I want. I make them happen. I've never been one that just has opportunities handed to her. I've always worked my butt off to make them happen. And in the end, as long as that road can be, I'm grateful for that because I appreciate it all the more when I reach my destination.
So my point is- do it. Just get out and do it. Whatever it is you want to do, put that goal in your mind, figure out how you're going to get there, and don't stop until you do. Life is going to feel so much sweeter when you've reached your goal because you were able to get there through all of the obstacle courses that life will throw at you. Don't settle. Life is too short to just accept what your life is today. If you want it to change, change it.Monday was the three year anniversary of the very first time I hit Publish on my own blog. I cannot say thank you enough times to those of you that have stuck with me from the beginning. Your support means EVERYTHING to me. And to those of you who are new friends, I'm so glad that you're here. I hope that you'll stick around for awhile.
